Simwerks Recommends

What is a good entry level setup to get into sim racing?

The question we get the most. It's a great question - and with todays tech, you can get an incredible experience for a great price. If you want the cheapest setup that will get you in the game, the look no further than a Moza R5 bundle and whatever screen you can get your hands on. For around $400 you can get a setup that will let you get into sim racing at a great price.

The question though, is when you want a little more. If you've got $2000 for your sim setup, that is where things get incredibly nuanced and it worth putting tin the effort to get a great combination that will last for years and leave very little lacking.

What goes into a sim rig?

A simracing rig/cockpit/whatever name you have for it is made up of a few critical pieces:

  • Foundation - the solid that holds it all together. The wheelbases are heavy and generate a lot of force. Whether rig mounted, desk mounted, or a hybrid setup, there are options that will work for you.

  • Wheelbase - the piece that generate the feedback into your wheel.

  • Wheel/Rim - The steering wheel that you put your hands on.

  • Pedals - Throttle, Brake, Clutch (if needed).

  • Seat - Bucket, recliner, or whatever you want.

  • Monitors - Single screen, ultrawide, or triples.

  • PC - A decent pc that will give you an acceptable experience.

Foundation

If you're trying to keep costs to an absolute minimum, just use the table clamps that come with the Moza R5. However, if we've got some room to navigate and a good base rig is in the cards, we can look at several options. These base Sim-Motion chassis options are great low budget options. There are literally hundreds of option out there these days and some are more specialized that others. But for a basic aluminum profile rig to mount a wheel base and pedals, there all similar for the most part (avoid the flimsy ones out there though. We also recommend staying away from the tube style rigs unless you know exactly what you're getting into. Most of our customers find 80mm chassis' to be more than enough (unless you're adding motion).

Our pick: Sim Motion 80mm Premium Aluminum Extrusion Chassis

Premium Pick: ASR PRO with PRO Wheel Deck (email us to order).

Wheelbase

Simagic Alpha EVO or the Moza R12 really work well in this space for entry level, but entry level without regret.... You actually don't need to upgrade from these, unless you really want to. Simagic or Moza? Our customers love them both.

Pedals

Simagic P1000s or the Moza CRP Pedals both feature load cells and work well. If you can swing it, definitely get the hydraulic option for the brake.

When you're looking at pedals, you'll also notice that some of these have an inverted option. It's not necessary, but can be helpful in certain situations. Check out this video by our friends at Father & Son hobbies for more thought on that.

Bonus option: These Heusinkveld pedals work great with the plug and play nature of the pedals. They have the name when with comes reliability for pedals - and they mount directly to the ASR profiles or the to minimize additional plates needed.

Our recommendation is also to get a haptic reactor if you can swing it to get the feedback from ABS, etc. You'll need a mount, but shoot us an email and lets talk if you go this route.

Monitors

Triples, ultrawide, single screen? Any will do. The one question to ask is how bad do you need/want to see that passenger side window and mirror? Without screwing up the FOV, the only way to get that passenger side is by utilizing triples. However, our customer have had great success on everything from single 27" screens, to 55" Bravia 8 4k 120HZ TVs, to Samsung 49", and triple 32" monitors. Note, call us and lets talk through what monitor you should get to match the pc you will buy. No reason to get a massive PC to play on low quality screens and the same goes the other way. You dont need iRacing at 4k to enjoy it. But getting something that will work great is not too bad here.

Our Pick: We love these Samsung Odyssey G55C 32" triple monitors at 1440p. They offer a great wrap around experience with their 1000R curvature (less is more for R rating) and a great value particularly with keeping a good balance of what you're asking for from your PC and to maintain high FPS. you will have to pick up a triple monitor stand which add a few buck.

PC

We work directly with a local PC integrator BACR. The owner has driven our rigs and knows the experience our customers want.
